One week before Christmas, the question comes up again: what do people in Austria actually eat on Christmas Eve? Festive meals are a long‑standing tradition, but the dishes vary widely from one province to another. According to a recent iglo study, 43 percent of Austrians say they always serve a special dish on December 24, while another 28 percent stick to a traditional meal that can occasionally be changed.
Raclette, cold platters, and soup are the favorites
If you’re still undecided about your own Christmas dinner, the most popular choices might offer some inspiration. The dishes most frequently served on Christmas Eve are raclette (24 percent), cold platters (20 percent), followed closely by soup (15 percent) and sausages (14 percent). Fondue (11 percent), roast goose (10 percent), carp, and salmon (each 9 percent) also appear often on holiday tables.
Tastes vary strongly from province to province.
The regional differences are striking. Carp is a traditional favorite in the east, especially in Vienna and Burgenland. In Carinthia, boiled sausages with sauerkraut are the most common choice, while raclette dominates in Vorarlberg. Salzburg sees soup served particularly often, and in Upper Austria, sausages are closely tied to Christmas traditions.
